India’s data centres shift cooling strategy amid water crisis

India’s data centre industry is rapidly shifting toward sustainable cooling solutions as freshwater scarcity intensifies. Reliance Jio Platforms is adopting seawater-based cooling for its 168 MW data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, reducing dependence on freshwater resources. With data centres projected to more than double water consumption by 2030, companies are exploring closed-loop and alternative cooling technologies to support digital infrastructure growth while addressing rising environmental and water security concerns.
