India missed the chip bus. Now it playing catch up
India has taken its first big step into semiconductor manufacturing with the launch of its first made-in-India chip at Semicon India 2025. Despite decades of missed opportunities, the country is now catching up through the ₹76,000 crore PLI scheme and rapid ecosystem development. With five chip units under construction, India aims to cut import dependence and emerge as a global semiconductor hub.
