Centre bets on inland waterways, coastal shipping to drive logistics efficiency
The Union Budget 2026–27 has signalled a strong push towards inland waterways and coastal shipping to improve logistics efficiency. The Centre plans to operationalise 20 new national waterways over five years and launch a coastal cargo promotion scheme to drive modal shift, aiming to double the share of water-based freight movement to 12 per cent by 2047.
