Centre allows storage of harmful petroleum-based substances in coastal area
The Centre has approved storage of certain petroleum-based substances, described as harmful, in coastal areas. Under the CRZ Notification, petroleum and chemical products can be stored in coastal zones only if listed in its permitted-products annexure, so the decision appears to widen what port-side terminals may handle. Environmental consultants and coastal developers should review the updated list and any accompanying safeguards before planning projects.
