Budget 2026 puts India on a new course with Rs 10,000 crore for containers & waterways

In Budget 2026, India plans to operationalise 20 inland waterways and launch a ₹10,000-crore Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme to reduce empty container imports and boost domestic production. Coastal cargo movement will be incentivised, with ship repair facilities in Varanasi and Patna, aiming to double waterways and coastal shipping’s share to 12% by 2047.
